Agent Spotlight: Don Meehan

As far as NHL agents go, Don Meehan is the cream of the crop.

Meehan has been a certified NHL sports agent since 1996 and has represented players since 1981 and he currently has over 100 NHL clients which is more than any other two NHL agents combined.

Meehan’s agency is now regarded as the most successful hockey player agency in the world.

Meehan earned his bachelor’s degree at Sir George Williams University and went on to study law at McGill University’s Faculty of Law where he graduated with a law degree in 1975.

While at McGill, Meehan played football under Coach Charlie Baillie and was considered a sensational wide receiver.

After earning his law degree Meehan was hired by prominent Toronto law firm Blaney Pasternak where for the most part he dealt with corporate and tax-related cases.

In 1981 Meehan was offered a partnership from Blaney Pasternak but he declined the offer in order to create to create his own company, Newport Sports Management Inc., which focused on hockey players.

Named and operated in a partnership with fellow agent Pat Morris, Newport Sports Management has evolved into one of the most respected agencies in all of professional sports and represents over 100 NHL players.

In growing Newport Sports, Meehan vigilantly put together a team of exceptional player representatives including:

  • Pat Morris
  • Craig Oster
  • Rand Simon
  • Wade Arnott
  • Mark Guy

In addition, Meehan built an international agency and did not stop in just North America.

Bringing together colleagues who are based in several countries throughout the world, Meehan has cemented Newport’s status as a true international agency and as a result, have recruited some of hockey’s top international talent.

Instead of approaching players that have been drafted and are already playing in the NHL, Meehan contacted the families of young hockey players prior to being drafted by the National Hockey League (NHL).

One of the first young talents that Meehan represented as an agent was talented center Pat LaFontaine, who hired Meehan a few months before he was drafted in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft.

Every year, many international hockey teams and NHL All-Star teams are comprised of several players that are represented by Meehan and Newport Sports.

Newport Sports Management represents over 100 NHL players including:

  • Mike Brodeur, Ottawa Senators
  • Matt Cooke, Pittsburgh Penguins
  • Jonathan Ericsson, Detroit Red Wings
  • Jarome Iginla, Calgary Flames
  • Viktor Stalberg, Chicago Blackhawks
  • Brandon Sutter, Carolina Hurricanes

Besides helping players get noticed, big time hockey agents concentrate on contract negotiations, financial management, tax and estate planning, summer training and development, entry draft preparation and making sure they are properly insured.
