What Winnipeg Has: An elite goal-scorer in Kyle Connor; veteran talents in forwards Blake Wheeler, Nik Ehlers and Mark Scheifele, and defensemen Josh Morrissey, Neal Pionk and Brenden Dillon; a top-shelf goaltender in Connor Hellebuyck; a new head coach in Rick Bowness; young, still-developing forwards in Cole Perfetti and Pierre-Luc Dubois.

What Winnipeg Needs: More production on offense from their bottom-six group of forwards; solid support for Hellebuyck in newcomer David Rittich; better luck health-wise for their forwards; an improved road record (they were a sub-par 16-17-8 away from home last season); a better showing in shootouts (they were 2-4 in 2021-22).

What’s Realistic For Winnipeg Next Season: After making the playoffs for four consecutive seasons, the Jets crapped out last year, disappointing their legion of fans and causing questions about the direction of the franchise. Unfortunately for them, those questions remain largely unanswered, and there’s an overall sense of mediocrity that has permeated the organization through this off-season.

Let’s start with Winnipeg’s coaching situation: after longtime bench boss Paul Maurice stepped down during the 2021-22 campaign, he was replaced in the short term by Dave Lowry – and, when the New York Islanders unexpectedly fired head coach and Manitoba native Barry Trotz at season’s end, it was widely expected that the Jets wanted to bring Trotz in. However, after a long waiting period, Trotz chose to take more time before embarking on a new NHL challenge – not exactly the best comment on Winnipeg’s overall competitive status. If Trotz had wanted to be Winnipeg’s coach, the job was his. Instead, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff hired former Dallas Stars head coach Rick Bowness, a move that felt like they were getting their second-best choice for the role. Not ideal, to say the least.

Similarly, while Winnipeg still has above-average talent throughout the lineup, there is the sense that Jets stars, with the exceptions of leading scorer Kyle Connor and goalie Connor Hellebuyck, are simply not in the same class as the very best players in their division. This is not to say their players don’t have value; rather, it’s about comparing them to the top players on the best teams in the Central Division, and acknowledging Winnipeg doesn’t have nearly enough depth to be a top-four team in their division.

Indeed, if it wasn’t for the fact they play in the same group as the sad-sack Arizona Coyotes and tanking Chicago Blackhawks, the Jets might have finished lower in the Central last season. Winnipeg was an abysmal road team in 2021-22, and given that their roster remains more or less identical to the one that finished the year, it’s difficult to envision the Jets suddenly leapfrogging the Dallas Stars and Nashville Predators for a playoff berth this coming season.

The Jets do have a good deal of salary cap space at the moment, but unless they swing a trade for an impact player, they’re very likely to finish the 2022-23 campaign in the same place they finished one year ago. And if that’s how it all plays out, fans will be (rightfully) calling for Cheveldayoff to be replaced. Cheveldayoff has had a whopping 11 seasons in his current position, far longer than many GMs have received in other hockey hotbeds. If there’s a continuing regression with this group, there could and should be widespread change within the franchise.

The Jets’ rabid fan base deserves better than this so-so collection of talent. There’s simply insufficient depth for Winnipeg to lean on if the injury bug bites them hard again, and this is another comment on the mediocre job Cheveldayoff has done. Another year like last season will be tough enough for Jets supporters to stomach, but it will be exponentially worse if Winnipeg team owner Mark Chipman doesn’t hold Cheveldayoff accountable for it.

Here are three takeaways from Thursday at Sedgefield Country Club:

The Tom Kim train rolls on

The half-baked train pun there—that’s a reference to Thomas the Tank Engine. Why do we care about Thomas the Tank Engine? Tom Kim. That’s why. Officially listed on leaderboards as Joohyung Kim, the 20-year-old South Korean goes by Tom because he liked Thomas the Tank Engine as a kid. Kim has choo-choo’d up the World Ranking in the last eight months. He began 2022 outside the top 130 but won his first event of the year on the Asian Tour and continued solid play on that circuit got him into the U.S. Open. He finished a respectable 23rd that week and followed it with a solo third against a stacked field at the Genesis Scottish Open. He made his next two cuts on the PGA Tour, including at the Open Championship, before a final-round 63 and a solo seventh at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic saw him rise to World No. 34—and, more importantly, all but lock up his PGA Tour card for 2022-23 through non-member points. There is no one on Earth who is both younger than Kim and ranked higher than him.

It’s been a hectic stretch in a foreign country, and after he quadruple-bogeyed his first hole of the day on Thursday, you’d forgive him for mailing it in and calling it a year. But he’s not yet of legal drinking age in the States—he’s too young and has too much energy to go down so easily. Kim played his final 17 holes in seven under par to post a most impressive three-under 67. Per the PGA Tour, he is just the third player on record to start his round with a quad and still shoot under par. And so … all together now … the train rolls on.

“I was laughing because it was the first hole of the day and it was probably the worst start I’ve ever had in my career so far,” Kim said. “All I could do was laugh because just some shots I hit there was pretty awful. But I don’t know, for some reason I felt calm. It was one bad hole and I just told myself, you know what, I can still get this, I can still shoot under par today and somehow I did, yeah.”

A career-low round for a journeyman

Odds are, you would not recognize John Huh if he walked by you. He’s won on the PGA Tour, but it was an opposite-field event and it happened more than a decade ago. Huh has never cracked the top 60 of the world and currently sits at No. 248. But John Huh has quietly made more than $10 million in his PGA Tour career, and this week marks his 266th start. He is, by any reasonable definition, a journeyman. And this start is as important as any, as he entered the week ranked 120th in the FedEx Cup points standings, dangerously close to that 125 threshold.

Good time, then, to play the best round of his career. The 32-year-old went out in 29 at Sedgefield CC en route to a nine-under 61, which has him sitting on a two-shot lead over Sungjae Im. He wasn’t expecting this.

“I’m actually surprised I’m at the top of the leaderboard, yeah, to be quite honest with you,” Huh said. “I didn’t really feel my game was there, but it’s one of those days where I took advantage of some good shots and good breaks, I think.”

Rickie Fowler is in danger of missing the postseason (again)

Until last season, Rickie Fowler had made the FedEx Cup Playoffs every year in which he’s been a PGA Tour member. That streak ended last summer, and that was supposed to be the low point of a prolonged slump that has run concerningly long. Early signs this season were positive—he hung around the lead in his second start of the wraparound campaign, finishing with a T-3 at the CJ Cup at the Summit Club, but he has failed to post even one top-20 finish in 18 starts since.

As such, he entered this week at 123rd in the FedEx Cup standings—which have been adjusted to not include guys now playing LIV—and needs to make the cut to get into the playoffs. He’ll still have a card next year by way of his 2015 Players Championship victory, but missing the playoffs two years in a row would be a pretty brutal pill to swallow.

It could well happen. A week after missing the Rocket Mortgage classic cut by six, Fowler opened the Wyndham with a one-over 71 that has him outside the top 100 heading into Friday. It’s gut-check time—if he’s to salvage a respectable season, he absolutely needs to shoot something solid tomorrow. Which is one tough ask given the state of his game.

Yes, the seven-time national championship winner who had a first-year starting quarterback win the Heisman and the best defensive player in the country proclaimed a 13-2 campaign as “rebuilding.”

The Crimson Tide start this season at home against Utah State, instead of at a neutral site against a top-25 opponent like they usually do.

However, a Week 2 date in Austin with the Texas Longhorns and six other foes (all in the SEC) are preseason top-25. Yet, with Bama having five starters on offense and seven on defense back from last year’s noticeably young roster, this team somehow feels even better than the team that finished runners-up to the Georgia Bulldogs.

Bryce Young should have a better offensive line in front of him and a plethora of talented running backs in the stable. Additions through the transfer portal in running back Jahmyr Gibbs, wideouts Jermaine Burton and Tyler Harrell, lead me to believe that despite losing star wideouts, the Tide offense will still be lethal.

The defense is even scarier!

Will Anderson Jr. is the future first overall pick, Eli Ricks joins an already experienced secondary after transferring in from LSU, and many were surprised veterans Henry To’o To’o and Jordan Battle returned for another season after leading the way in ’21.

Rising Tide

Just when you think the dynasty is coming to an end, Saban pulls out a quote like this. A recruiting class bound to contribute right away adds depth on both sides of the ball. Meanwhile, veterans and starters from seasons past remain.

Saban didn’t see his offensive and defensive coordinators leave this offseason either. How is it that this team is looking better heading into the fall than they were last year?

Saban keeps producing. The Tide keeps rolling (and rising).
